I’ve got the basics figured out. It’s such a great size. I think it will be no problem to have attached to whatever daypack I’m using or even around the neck on the included lanyard. It acquires a lock in a minute or 2 and so far has had no problem maintaining that lock in a car, even when it’s through lots of trees (although there are no leaves yet to interfere).

I found a few free maps for Massachusetts that I put on the Vista and that gave me roads for most of the state but I can’t get turn by turn directions from that. So I’ve bitten the bullet and ordered Garmin’s North America City Navigator map DVD. Not cheap (~$125) but it’s all the US and most of Canada. One can howver order it from REI in order to get the member dividend (or use a REI coupon for 20% off). Since the coupon made up for the 2 day shipping, it will be here on Monday. That should be enough time to work out how to get the maps I want for the upcoming trip to Utah and Nevadaon the 14th.

It’s a Garmin Vista Cx. Even though I knew its dimensions, it’s a lot smaller than I though it would be. So far, all I’ve done is take it outside at break and get a satellite lock. I hope to manage to geotag my photos with this (and get lost less that I currently do). More on this as I figure out how to use it.
